Product Introduction

At the end of 2020, Dow Chemical launched a new generation of high-performance industrial acrylic resin MAINCOTE HG-300 (hereinafter referred to as HG-300); compared with most industrial acrylic resins on the market, HG-300, in addition to its excellent comprehensive performance, is particularly outstanding in corrosion resistance, early water resistance and flash rust resistance.


In order to better illustrate the various properties of HG-300, the evaluation test uses commercially available water-based epoxy esters and commercially available acrylic emulsions as comparisons. Commercially available acrylic resins should never be underestimated, as they are regarded as industry benchmarks in the field of industrial corrosion protection (HG-300 does not kill unknown products).
Let's compare these three aspects one by one:

1.
Corrosion resistance:

 

(Dry film 40-50 microns, unpolished cold-rolled steel plate, dried at 60°C for 20 minutes, dried at room temperature for 7 days; black system, 18% PVC, containing anti-rust pigment)

As we all know, it is the most difficult to achieve good salt spray performance for black paint systems formulated with carbon black. As shown in the right picture, the serious corrosion of a benchmark acrylic system on the market after 240 hours of salt spray test is obvious. After the same system is replaced with HG-300, the 240-hour test result reaches the level of current water-based epoxy esters, and even performs better than water-based epoxy esters in terms of flat plate blistering.

Early water resistance
 

(Coating system is the same as above, drying at 60℃ for 20 minutes + 1h soaking in water at room temperature)

Whether compared with water-based epoxy ester systems or similar acrylic systems, HG-300 has significantly superior early water resistance.

3.
Flash rust resistance
 

Anti-flash rust performance is the pain point of traditional acrylic emulsions and also the selling point of waterborne epoxy esters. HG-300 has outstanding anti-flash rust performance, which is comparable to that of waterborne epoxy esters in varnish systems and significantly better than commercially available acrylic emulsions. In paint systems, waterborne epoxy esters have better anti-flash rust performance due to their high solvent content, but HG-300 can also achieve excellent anti-flash rust performance with the help of a small amount of anti-flash rust additives (1/3 of the conventional amount).

Applications
Metal corrosion protection, especially applications with high requirements for salt spray resistance, is the target area of ​​HG-300. Especially for automotive parts coatings, HG-300 can replace the existing water-based epoxy ester system or be added to the water-based epoxy ester system as a resin.

1) Replace waterborne epoxy ester


The water-based epoxy ester system contains 20-30% butanol, has a very strong smell, and the VOC content of the system reaches 150g/L; while the HG-300 system has no odor, and its VOC content can be as low as one-tenth of that of the water-based epoxy ester.


Due to its air-drying property, water-based epoxy esters have slow drying speed, poor early hardness and early water resistance; in contrast, the HG-300 system has a faster drying speed, better early water resistance, and anti-stacking effect. This feature can help downstream coating users to achieve faster stacking and transportation of workpieces and improve production efficiency.


HG-300 has the same salt spray corrosion resistance as water-based epoxy ester.


The weather resistance of HG-300 is much higher than that of water-based epoxy ester system.


The flash rust resistance of HG-300 is close to that of waterborne epoxy ester.


HG-300 has excellent adhesion to various substrate systems and can achieve the adhesion characteristics of water-based epoxy esters to a certain extent.

2) Although HG-300 has excellent comprehensive performance, as an acrylic emulsion
, it cannot be used for grinding and pulping like water-based epoxy esters. At the same time, the gloss of the coating cannot reach the effect of water-based epoxy esters, and its application in high-gloss systems has certain limitations. However, by using water-based epoxy esters with HG-300, it is possible to improve the drying speed of the coating while retaining the coating characteristics of the former, and achieve better early water resistance and anti-stacking performance. The evaluation shows that HG-300 and water-based epoxy esters have excellent compatibility, and the salt spray resistance of the mixed blend is better than that of either one alone, truly realizing complementary advantages and achieving the effect of one plus one being greater than two.

In addition, HG-300 has excellent adhesion to a variety of substrates such as metal, wood, plastic rubber and ceramics, and has a certain sealing effect on wood. By utilizing this feature, HG-300 can be fully applied to outdoor coating systems.
