Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the demand for medical consumables has skyrocketed due to the need for diagnosis and treatment. In the in vitro diagnostic market, almost all liquid handling methods are completed through pipettes. Pipette is a device specially used to measure the volume of liquid and drip the absorbed blood and tissue into other containers. The pipette tip is usually used as an important disposable consumable in conjunction with the pipette. According to QYResearch, the global demand for pipette tips will show an increasing trend (with a compound growth rate of 10.23% and is expected to reach a market of US$1.6 billion in 2026).
Conductive PP material used in pipette tips is an ideal material for liquid level detection applications and has always played a vital role in in vitro diagnostics. As a medical-grade conductive PP, it also has strict requirements for its important component, conductive carbon black, and its conductive performance only meets basic needs. The ENSACO series (ENSACO 250G, ENSACO 260G and ENSACO 350G) represented by our company is a high-purity conductive carbon black developed for the polymer field, with the following outstanding features:
01
Small addition amount, excellent conductive performance
The high structural properties of the ENSACO series can give the material high conductivity at low addition levels. Usually, the addition level is 14-17% (depending on the screw shear strength, feeding method, and injection molding process, and the theoretical threshold is usually around 14%), which can reach a surface resistance of 10 to the 3rd to 5th power. At the same time, in addition to helping to reduce the impact of fluidity, low addition levels also largely retain the physical properties of the material itself, especially the impact on toughness.
02
Smaller area, improved dispersion and material fluidity
Generally speaking, the higher the structure of conductive carbon black, the better the conductivity, the larger the specific surface area of carbon black particles, and the higher the oil absorption value. Relying on Yiruishi's unique carbon black production process, taking ENSACO 250G/260G as an example, when the OAN oil absorption value is 190, the specific surface area of carbon black is only 65m2/g, while the comparative area of conductive carbon black at the same stage is usually 200 or even higher. The lower specific surface area reduces the contact surface with the matrix resin PP, and has the smallest impact on the melt index of the material in the same level, especially for thin-walled nozzles with up to 48 cavities in one mold, which have extremely high requirements on the fluidity of the material. At the same time, the low surface area helps to evenly disperse carbon black in the PP resin, providing another guarantee for improving the comprehensive performance of the material.
03
Extremely low moisture/impurity content and high product batch stability
As the key removal targets in the plastics industry, moisture and impurities have a decisive influence on the performance of materials and the injection molding appearance of products. As another differentiated highlight of the ENSACO series of Yiruishi, the moisture and impurity content is strictly controlled. The left picture shows the comparison of the surface functional group content of ENSACO 250G carbon black, and the right picture shows the water absorption characteristics of different conductive carbon blacks under the condition of full water absorption. It can be clearly seen that the ENSACO series carbon black has higher purity and lower impurity content, and can be used in various high-end occasions.
In the conductive PP formula of pipette tips, our company also introduced modified polyethylene wax that can promote the dispersion of carbon black and functional additives that enhance the anti-aging performance of materials. The outstanding features are large molecular weight and narrow molecular weight distribution, and no migration and precipitation will occur during the processing and terminal use.
Product Q&A
time
What are the production process requirements for conductive carbon black?
answer
In terms of production equipment, it is recommended to use dedicated machines and take protective measures for electromechanical equipment to prevent the accumulation of conductive carbon black and cause circuit short circuits. In terms of technology, it is recommended to use weak shearing for the ENSACO series, avoid 90° shearing and reverse threaded components, and prevent the carbon black structure from being physically damaged and the resistance from increasing.
ask
What is the recommended addition method for conductive carbon black?
answer
It is recommended to choose a twin-screw side-feeding method for addition (existing side-feeding equipment can meet this requirement).
ask
What are other applications of conductive carbon black?
answer
The basic threshold of conductive carbon black is conductivity, and ENSACO conductive carbon black, which integrates various differentiated characteristics, can meet the modification of various engineering plastics, such as PC/PA/ABS/PET, etc., and is used in various anti-static occasions. The most representative application is the electronic carrier industry.
