As a commonly used matrix resin material, epoxy resin has the characteristics of strong bonding, excellent electrical insulation, easy processing and molding, good filler combination performance, excellent wear resistance, etc. It is widely used in chemical industry, aerospace, medicine, environmental protection and other fields. However, after curing, epoxy resin forms a highly cross-linked three-dimensional network structure, which is brittle, poor in impact resistance, and insufficient in crack propagation resistance. Therefore, it is particularly important to toughen it.

There are three common methods for toughening epoxy resins:

01

It can be compounded with materials with excellent toughness such as rubber elastomers, thermoplastic resins and thermotropic liquid crystal polymers for second phase toughening.

02

Forming a composite material with a semi-penetrating or interpenetrating network structure.

03

Introducing flexible chain segments can improve the flexibility of the molecular chain and reduce the cross-linking density.

Ancarez® 2364 Product Introduction

Evonik Ancarez®2364 epoxy resin toughener is mainly composed of medium viscosity acrylic polyurethane resin. This product has a long stable time after mixing with epoxy resin and can react completely when mixed with amine curing agent.

01

Performance Advantages

*Higher tear strength, tensile strength, elongation and hardness.

*Excellent low temperature performance.

*Good moisture resistance.

*Can be used to adjust different performance effects.

02

application

Ancarez® 2364 toughening agent can meet the different requirements of toughness and flexibility in different applications. This product has moderate viscosity and is compatible with epoxy resins. It is specially used in coatings and civil engineering applications such as resilient flooring, crack bridging, bridge decks and secondary containment.

03

Dosage

Ancarez®2364 Toughener must be used in conjunction with the epoxy resin in the “A” component of the formulation. If used in small amounts, Ancarez®2364 Toughener can be used to improve those strong, flexible, high-hardness formulations. High doses of Ancarez®2364 Toughener can provide higher elongation and lower modulus to the formulation. The effective dosage range is between 15% and 80% of the weight of the resin in the formulation.

03

Using higher doses of Ancarez® 2364 can improve the toughness of the formulation. Adding different ratios of Ancarez® 2364 toughening agent to the resin part, when the addition amount is 75%, the elongation can be increased by more than 160%. The figure below shows the elongation of the toughening agent used in combination with the selected curing agent after 7 days of room temperature curing.

Product Q&A Time

Q:
Can you list the elongation ranges corresponding to the toughness requirements of different applications?
100% and above: containment lining, crack bridging, bridge deck; 50% to 100%: suitable for constructing joint caulking fillers and potting compounds; 30% to 50%: rigid floors, elastic coatings.

Q:
What types of curing agents should be used with Ancarez® 2364?

Aliphatic amine based and low functional curing agents can maximize toughness and elongation in formulations containing Ancarez® 2364 toughening agent. Curing agents based on aromatic amines, polyamides, and amidoamines have poor compatibility or elongation when Ancarez® 2364 is used. Amine curing agents typically have four or more reactive sites per molecule. To maximize toughness in a formulation, the average number of amine functional groups in the curing agent should be less than four. It has been found that amine mixtures with an average of less than four functional groups can produce formulations with elongation greater than 100%, such as Ancamine® 1768.

Q:
Do different types of epoxy resins have any effect on the toughening of Ancarez® 2364?

Ancarez® 2364 toughening agent is most effective when used with low-functionality resins such as those based on bisphenol A and bisphenol F. Mixing with high-functionality resins such as epoxy novolac resins tends to reduce toughness and elongation.
