Application of VESTOSINT Evonik nylon micropowder in high-performance coatings

Release Time:

What is PA12 nylon micro powder

PA12 nylon micro powder is a type of polyamide material with 12 carbon repeating units. Through a series of special processes such as high-temperature dissolution, crystallization and screening of raw materials, it forms a micro powder product with a microscopically close to spherical or potato-shaped structure.

PA12 has the lowest amide content among many nylon families, which results in the lowest moisture absorption of the material and high stability of material strength and other properties under humidity changes.

According to the difference in micropowder particle size, Evonik's VESTOSINT series products cover various sizes ranging from 5 microns to nearly 60 microns. The specific grades are as follows:

Performance characteristics of nylon micro powder

Toughness and Resilience

Adding nylon micropowder can effectively improve the flexibility of the coating and improve the processing resistance of the coating. On the one hand, it benefits from the good elasticity of nylon micro powder, and on the other hand, the nylon micro powder and the resin system can be very tightly combined through chemical cross-linking. A typical example is rolling shutter door coating. Adding nylon micropowder can ensure that the coating can achieve 180 degree bending (0T) without cracking.

Wear resistance

Adding nylon micropowder to the coating system can significantly improve the wear resistance of the coating. Although micronized wax can play a similar role to a certain extent, adding too much wax powder will often bring about some negative effects, such as reduced stain resistance, local precipitation, and surface blooming. Nylon micropowder can avoid these side effects.

In addition, by mixing and adding nylon micropowder and wax powder, the wear resistance of the coating can be more effectively improved.

Nylon micropowder also has good chemical resistance and has good resistance to solvents and alkaline substances. At the same time, nylon micropowder has good stain resistance, and adding it to the coating can significantly improve the stain resistance of the coating.

Nylon differential food safety properties

Nylon micropowder complies with FDA certification standards for food contact (21 CFR, 177.1500(a)(9)). Except for situations where it cannot be used in direct contact with alcohol, it can be used in all coating systems that may come into contact with food.

Application of nylon micropowder in coatings

Coil coating

By adding products with different particle sizes and product combinations, different surface effects can be achieved. At the same time, the addition of nylon micropowder can significantly improve the wear resistance of the coating.

In addition, adding nylon micropowder can also improve the stain resistance of the coating, because matting powder is not required and has no negative effect on the weather resistance of the coating, making it suitable for outdoor buildings.

Nylon micropowder is also particularly suitable for coil coating systems used in roller shutter applications, and can significantly improve the coating's processing resistance and wear resistance.

rubber coating

Nylon micropowder is widely used in the automotive seal strip coating industry. The spherical structure and low friction coefficient of the micropowder can significantly reduce the friction during the window opening and closing process, and has long-term effectiveness.

wood coating

Nylon micropowder is used in wood paint. In addition to improving the wear resistance of the coating, it can also be used with products of different particle sizes to form different surface texture effects.

Thermosetting powder coating

The addition of nylon micropowder to thermosetting powder coatings can significantly improve the elasticity, strength and wear resistance of the coating. At the same time, different surface effects can also be achieved by matching different particle sizes.

Food packaging foil coating

Nylon micropowder has good food safety and can be added to the coating of soft foil films (such as aluminum foil) to help improve the wear resistance of the foil film.
