What are the causes of coating aging?

 

The causes of polymer aging are mostly: thermal degradation, oxidation degradation, photo-degradation, ozone degradation, hydrolysis, among which coating photo-aging and thermal aging have the greatest impact.    

 

From the molecular structure, the macromolecular chain RH in the polymer is heated, ultraviolet or mechanical force, at the weak bonds (double bonds, branches) in the molecular structure, the macromolecular free radical R is generated. The macromolecular free radical R· is oxidized by oxygen to form macromolecular peroxyl free radicals ROO· and macromolecular hydrogen peroxide ROOH, which decomposes into more active free radicals. The macromolecular free radical R· and the macromolecular peroxyl free radical ROO· combine to form inert molecules to terminate the chain reaction.

Ultraviolet light absorbers can inhibit the initiation stage of polymer degradation, because ultraviolet light absorbers have much stronger ultraviolet light absorption ability than various chromophores in polymers. After absorbing the ultraviolet light, they immediately convert it into harmless forms, such as infrared light energy dissipated as heat, or phosphorescence, fluorescence, etc., to release the absorbed ultraviolet light energy in a harmless manner to the polymer. The types of ultraviolet light absorbers include, cinnamic acid, salicylic acid, phenyl carbamate, oxazolidine, dibenzoyl ketone type, benzotriazoles type, triazin type, etc.

 

01 Diaryl ketones are widely used, primarily absorbing ultraviolet light in the wavelength range of 280-350nm. They are inexpensive and relatively friendly to both the human body and the environment. Common models include UV531, among others.

03 Triazine derivatives, which mainly absorb in the ultraviolet light band of 250-400nm, have high absorption efficiency, excellent thermal stability, and hardly interact with metals.
