What is PVAC?

PVAC is a thermoplastic polyvinyl acetate that can be used as low-profile additives (LPAs) in composite materials. It can be used to improve the high-temperature low shrinkage of SMC/BMC, the medium-temperature low shrinkage of pultrusion and continuous lamination, and the room-temperature low shrinkage of RTM and vacuum infusion.

1. Shrinkage of composite materials – not just a cosmetic problem

Warpage and dimensional differences affect stability and accuracy;

Reduce fatigue resistance;

The surface is not smooth enough and shiny enough;

Interface problem between UP/VE resin and glass fiber;

Composite materials have poor resistance to shrinkage at low temperatures.

2. WACKER’s PVAC products are suitable for almost all shrinkage problems

VINNAPAS® C resin - acid functional sheet materials, such as C341, C501, etc.;

VINNAPAS® PVAC homopolymer grade particle N-type resin, such as N60SP, N100, etc.;

VL copolymer soft hydrophobic low shrinkage agent particles, such as VINNEX® 8802 (8%VL), VINNEX® 8803 (12%VL);

Liquid polymer mixture of vinyl acetate/vinyl laurate copolymer and polyether, such as VINNEX® RT 800.

 

3. SMC/BMC molding, what are the application solutions for PVAC?

For SMC/BMC products with Class A surface, it is recommended to use VINNAPAS® C501

It can achieve Class A surface low shrinkage performance while improving the flexural modulus and gloss of SMC/BMC;

After using C501 mixed with other low shrinkage agents such as micronized PE powder or PS solution, the water absorption rate can be reduced and the coloring performance can be improved;

Using C501 mixed with PMMA as a low-shrinkage agent can reduce water absorption and reduce haze, and C501 can also improve the compatibility of PMMA and liquid UP resin. Both have better UV resistance than PS.

For SMC/BMC products with non-Class A surface, it is recommended to use N60SP and N100, which have a higher cost performance.

N100 has excellent shrinkage compensation performance and low water absorption;

The medium viscosity of N100 allows it to achieve higher solid content and filler ratio in styrene systems (compared to PS);

Production costs can be further reduced by blending with PS.

4. What are the PVAC solutions for pultrusion profile technology?

Using VINNAPAS® N60SP/N100 can achieve lower viscosity, pultruded profiles have excellent coating properties and excellent cost performance;

Use VINNAPAS® C501 for optimal surface quality;

In vinyl ester resin pultrusion, it is recommended to use VINNEX® 8802/8803, which has better low shrinkage effect.

 

5. Recommendation of liquid PVAC - VINNEX® RT 800

Liquid, easy to operate, can produce excellent anti-shrinkage effect at room temperature;

Solve micro-cracks and prevent chamfer cracking;

It can be used in composite materials of UP resin, vinyl resin, and polyurethane resin, including pultrusion, RTM, winding, molding, continuous molding and other processes, with very good low shrinkage effect;

Used in epoxy infusion resin, it has excellent toughening properties and a certain low shrinkage effect.
