Silicone-free, APEO-free, and low VOC | BYK-1748 solves two major pain points of epoxy composites: transparent defoaming and fogging.

2026-09-11
Epoxy composites, transparent casting resins, and castable sheets have long faced common industry pain points during molding and construction: high-viscosity systems are prone to microbubbles and large air bubbles during stirring, vacuuming, and casting; after curing, pinholes, air bubbles, and increased haze appear, directly damaging the transparent appearance; traditional silicone defoamers are prone to shrinkage pores and affecting interlayer adhesion, while mineral oil defoamers are prone to fogging and loss of transparency, and their environmental indicators are difficult to meet export and green manufacturing standards.
BYK's new BYK-1748 bio-based polymer defoamer is specially customized for high-transparency epoxy composite systems. Its 100% active, silicone-free formula provides powerful defoaming while fully preserving the resin's high transparency, balancing sustainable raw materials with stringent environmental compliance. It is perfectly suited for formulations such as carbon fiber composites, transparent castings, and solvent-free epoxy topcoats.

I. Core Product Advantages: 73% Bio-based Carbon Content, Sustainable Green Raw Materials. Relying on renewable bio-based raw materials to synthesize polymer structures, this product responds to low-carbon, green factory, and export eco-label requirements, distinguishing itself from traditional petrochemical defoaming and aligning with the sustainable development trend of composite materials.
100% Active Ingredients, Zero Carrier Solvent (VOC < 1500ppm). A completely solvent-free system with 100% solids content, offering high addition efficiency; small amounts achieve long-lasting defoaming and rapid defoaming. Extremely low VOC limits, suitable for solvent-free, high-solids composite formulations, avoiding the risk of VOC exceeding standards.
APEO-Free: Free of alkylphenol polyoxyethylene ethers and APEO surfactants, meeting environmental regulations for toys, electronics, marine composites, and food contact coatings in Europe and America, eliminating regulatory restrictions.
Silicone-Free Polymer System, Eliminating Pinholes and Adhesion Issues. Abandoning the silicone structure, it does not cause interlayer delamination or recoating loss of adhesion. Safe for use in carbon fiber prepregs, vacuum-infused composites, and multi-layer transparent topcoats.

II. Application Scenarios of Composite Materials
III. Usage Recommendations
01 Timing of Addition
Add during the resin pre-mixing stage and stir thoroughly at high speed. Minor adjustments can be made later, but sufficient shear force must be applied.
02 Recommended Addition Amount
Based on the total formula at 0.1–1.0%, high resin thickness, and a bubble system upper limit of 1.2%.
4. Special Attention
The storage and transportation temperature must be below 50°C.
When this additive is added to epoxy resin, a turbidity phenomenon may occur, which can be resolved by extending the stirring time or increasing the shear force.
