BYK-MAX CT 4260, a BYK clay additive, is a flame retardant synergist (anti-dripping and carbonization aid), especially in halogen-free flame retardant wires and cables. Based on the flame retardant V0 test grade, the addition of BYK-MAX CT 4260 helps reduce the overall use of mineral-based flame retardants (ATH and MDH) in wires and cables, with an oxygen index of >36 and a tensile elongation of >250%. At the same time, the tensile strength, volume resistivity, melt fluidity and water absorption of wires and cables are significantly improved.
01 Basic features of BYK-MAX CT 4260 clay additive
BYK-MAX CT 4260 is a surface-treated natural mineral product derived from bentonite (montmorillonite). Heterogeneous platelet-shaped mineral (similar to talc/kaolin/mica): approx. 1 nm thick, 300 – 1000 nm in diameter (DIN A4).


The clay additive BYK-MAX CT 4260 is produced using a special process of organic intercalation and exfoliation. Good exfoliation treatment can help to achieve excellent flame retardant and mechanical properties.

02 Advantages and processing difficulties of low smoke halogen-free flame retardant wires and cables

Compared with traditional PVC or halogen-containing cable materials, halogen-free flame retardant (HFFR) cable materials have many advantages:
• High flame retardancy.
• Does not produce toxic or corrosive gases (environmentally friendly and non-toxic).
• Low smoke and halogen free.
However, to pass the V0 flame retardant test, the typical aluminum hydroxide (ATH) concentration needs to be about 65%. High ATH content in cables affects mechanical properties, dispersibility and melt flow properties, which poses a great challenge to cable material factories.


03 BYK-MAX CT 4260 Application Examples
Halogen-free flame retardant cable material formula:
• Resin (typical): LLDPE, EVA.
• Flame retardant: ATH, BYK-MAX CT 4260.
• Additives: antioxidants, processing aids, coupling agents, compatibilizers, etc.
Application: Cable sheathing.
Test results:

Processing conditions: twin-screw extruder for granulation, tablet press for tableting, tablet thickness 2 mm.

Questions & Answers
Q: How is the clay additive BYK-MAX CT 4260 processed/compounded?
A: Since clay is provided in powder form, it is composed of agglomerates formed by stacking of flakes. In order to achieve the best results, high shear is required during its compounding process. In addition, the shear time is short in a twin-screw extruder, so suitable equipment is required, such as a twin-screw extruder with a length-to-diameter ratio of at least 40:1 and addition through side feeding.
Q: In addition to being used as a flame retardant synergist in wires and cables, does BYK's clay additive have other uses?
Answer: ⑴Provide barrier function in plastic cans/containers/films through anisotropy (tortuous path), blocking oxygen, water, solvents, etc.
⑵Lightweight PP, PA and other composite materials/reinforcement function.
⑶ Incompatible blended plastics (as solid compatibilizer).
