About Sinochem International (Fubia Chemical) FENTASORB 531

UV531
Sinochem International, a state-owned chemical enterprise, completed the acquisition of Jiangsu Fubia Chemicals Co., Ltd. on August 26, 2021. Fubia has an annual production capacity of 2,400 tons of FENTASORB 531 UV absorbers. The product has high purity (content: >99%) and good transparency. The normal addition amount does not affect the transparency of the product. It can be customized according to appearance requirements (flakes, large particles, etc.) to adapt to production environment and process requirements. As a high-purity standard chemical, it can replace the existing formula with UV531 product components and content.

Ultraviolet absorber UV531 product introduction
There are a large number of unsaturated bonds, carbonyl groups, terminal hydroxyl groups and other functional groups in plastics, which are easily broken and decomposed under the action of ultraviolet rays from sunlight, turning long-chain molecules into short-chain molecules, causing the plastic surface to become powdery, brittle, and cracked.
In the processing industry of polymer materials such as plastics and rubber, light stabilizers must be added to plastic products used outdoors to extend the service life of the plastics outdoors.
Light stabilizers are also called UV antioxidants and are classified according to different stabilization mechanisms :

FENTASORB 531 belongs to the benzophenone compound (abbreviated as UV531, scientific name 2-hydroxy-4-n-octyloxybenzophenone).
Appearance and properties: Light yellow or white needle-shaped crystalline powder, melting point: 48-49℃, flash point: 155℃, transmittance: 450nm 94%Min, 500nm, 97%Min, belongs to the UV-B ≈ UV-A range of ultraviolet absorbers (240-340nm, the absorption is particularly strong at 270-330nm).
UV531 is an excellent and efficient anti-aging agent specially used in outdoor products. It has stable performance and can be used in plastic packaging materials and children's plastics that come into contact with food. It has the characteristics of light color, non-toxicity, good compatibility, low migration and easy processing.
It has the greatest protective effect on polymers and helps reduce color, delay yellowing and block physical property loss. It is widely used in PE, PVC, PP, PS, ABS, polyurethane, rubber products, etc., and the general dosage is 0.1%-0.5%.
The mechanism of action of UV absorbers is to absorb harmful UV energy and convert it into heat energy for release.

Interpretation of the chemical reaction mechanism of UV absorbers :

The carbonyl and hydroxyl groups in molecules such as benzophenone derivative UV531 can produce intramolecular hydrogen bonds to form a chelate ring. When the molecules are irradiated with ultraviolet rays, they absorb energy, the molecular thermal vibration intensifies, the intramolecular hydrogen bonds are destroyed, the chelate ring opens, and the ultraviolet light energy is converted into heat energy and released, and then it returns to the initial molecular structure. Long-term use will not affect its performance, thereby preventing the polymer resin from absorbing ultraviolet energy and inducing photo-oxidation reactions.
UV531 has sufficient ability to absorb ultraviolet rays and also has high light stability.

Quantitative analysis of the effect: The theoretical value of the absorption efficiency of the UV absorber follows the Beer-Lambert law

Beer–Lambert law
The physical meaning of the Beer-Lambert law: the absorbance A is proportional to the concentration C of the absorbing substance and the thickness ι of the absorption layer.
Main characteristics of UV absorbers
Absorbs UV rays
Converts harmful UV energy into heat
The effect of use is related to the thickness of the product
Protect the body
Effectively protect the contents of transparent products from UV rays that would otherwise cause them to lose their effectiveness

UV531 product features and selection rules
UV531 Product Features

Plastic formula selection UV absorber UV531 rules
1. When hindered amine light stabilizers are used in polymers under limited conditions, only UV531 and other UV absorbers and light quenchers can be selected as weathering agents. However, in most plastic and rubber products: AO + hindered amine light stabilizer (HALS) + UV absorber (UV531, etc.) 0.5:1:1 ratio has a good synergistic effect.
2. Select according to the thickness of the product and the type of pigment in the formula. It is not recommended to use UV absorbers under the following two conditions:
The product is very thin and transparent (≤0.1 mm).
Use carbon black products with a color L value of 25 or less.
In addition to the above two types, any other type of natural color or added color filler plastic products can use UV absorbers such as UV531, especially in opaque products.
3. Plastics that easily absorb ultraviolet rays, such as PS, ABS, polyester, PC, etc., must be added with appropriate ultraviolet absorbers according to the processing temperature.

Q&A
1
Is the UV531 a one-time function? How long can it last?
Of course, it is not a one-time use. It is a low-concentration and high-performance UV absorber. Mechanism of action: It absorbs harmful UV energy and converts it into heat energy, which can then be restored to its original structure.
Theoretically, it can cycle indefinitely, but after UV531 absorbs ultraviolet energy, hydrogen bonds break and molecular isomerization (called enol structure) occurs. The hydrogen bonds will be captured by harmful peroxide free radicals, resulting in the failure of the ultraviolet absorber performance. Stability and formula components work together. Basic hindered phenol antioxidants must be added. It is recommended to add hindered amine light stabilizers or a small amount of thioester auxiliary antioxidants.

What is the method of adding UV531? What is the commonly used combination of additions?
UV531 Common Adding Methods
Add high concentration masterbatch and resin raw material for extrusion and injection molding products
Directly add the powder mixing process and then extrude and granulate.
Add combination
General anti-UV masterbatch: 79% LDPE + 8% UV531 + 5% 326 + (6% titanium dioxide + 2% PE wax); conventional weathering formula: 0.1-0.3% phenolic antioxidant + 0.1-0.5% UV531.
