40 is an organo-modified bentonite derivative used as a thixotropic thickener and anti-settling agent in solvent-borne coating systems of low to medium polarity.
CLAYTONE 40 is a conventional organoclay that requires the addition of an activator to fully function.
As an organo-modified montmorillonite product, CLAYTONE 40 swells in organic media and builds a gel structure (house of cards). This thixotropic gel structure is formed by weak hydrogen bonds between individual montmorillonite platelets. For optimal efficiency, the platelets need to be completely separated (agglomerates fully dispersed into primary particles).
